Looking under rocks, the Funding Trail is next

17 Aug

This summer we have been sharing many short clips on this blog of Marjorie Wood and Lucy Seeds as they talk about Emma’s life, struggles and accomplishments, ( you can view any or all of them by going to the “categories” selection widget). Now we are ready to start our production in earnst. We have a scripted outline, scholars and experts, and amazing archives to support our story too.

We are still searching for film and video clips from the fifties and sixties that have Emma in them (Art Linkletter, The Today Show, Groucho Marx “You Bet Your Life”). Getting access to film and video archives is like searching for the proverbial needle in a haystack, but we know there out there.  But that research will have wait until after we get our primary shooting completed.  Our production time line starts with raising funds to complete the script, cast an actress to play Emma, and hit the road to shoot next spring to shoot her story.

WGTE, the PBS station in Toledo Ohio, has agreed to be our broadcast partner so the next big step is to search for funding. We have started the process with our local Humanities, but also look to you to point us in new directions, foundations, competitions, and organizations that might be interested in Emma’s very important story.

We are looking for angels and sympathetic funding organizations. Maybe you know one or can introduce us. So often the best ideas like Kickstart are lying under our nose in plain sight. But often there are groups and individuals that might be very interested in supporting a story like Emma’s that showcases a positive role model in otherwise challenged circumstances. It is a long trail, your insights and friendship are great to have on the journey.

I so hope this story will be told! I wish you the best as you look for more funding. One idea, if you are not already aware of this, is the Quimby Family Foundation, started by Roxanne Quimby and her children. Roxanne is the founder of Burts Bees. The Foundation has particular focus on projects involving Maine, but Roxanne is also very involved in environmental issues and protection of wild lands, and I believe her daughter completed the AT a few years ago. You can find the Foundation on the web.
